The (MMA) Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, combines many different fighting techniques, including grappling and striking, and high performance standards, particularly in the often intense, and very popular MMA tournaments. The first tournaments came about as a result of the 1993 Ultimate Fighting Championship, which matched different fighting styles in a competition where the rules were minimal and the goal was to find the best fighters in the world. The success of this mixed martial arts combat style led to the development and implementation of rules designed to keep athletes safe and deflect early criticism of the sport while still holding on to the original concept of the UFC as much as possible. The modern MMA tournaments have their roots in the Vale tudo martial arts tournaments held in Brazil by the Gracie family beginning in the 1920s, and the preliminary martial arts tournaments hosted in Japan by Antonio Inoki in the early 1970s. There are several different competition techniques, including striking techniques, l...

Urijah Faber and His Role In Mixed Martial Arts

Urijah Faber was born in his parents home on May 14th, 1979, in the small college town of Isla Vista. His parents holistic practices would come to influence all aspects of his life, including his successful MMA career and UFC affiliation. Fabers healthy diet and exercise helped gain him early success as a star athlete in the small town where he grew up, excelling in football, wrestling, and other sports. Some Basics About Tai Chi

The centuries old practice of tai chi is an integral part of a holistic health lifestyle, along with yoga. Its roots come from China, and this martial art focuses on principles which will lead to better health and longevity. If you don't know a whole lot about tai chi, you may recognize it from its depictions in movies or on television: it is often shown as a group of people under the trees in a park, moving their limbs and bodies in ultra slow motion in unison. Of course, tai chi doesn't have to be practiced outdoors, but that has been a tradition in China for centuries. Moreover, there are certain types of tai chi that move at a much faster pace than the stereotypical depiction.Modern tai chi combines philosophies found in both Taoism and Confucianism; strength of body and internal power are developed and combined into a unity of one. Although it is often a group activity, its practice is primarily a series of routines performed solos. These "forms" provide general health benefits and have been shown to be ...

Martial Arts Training Is Not Just About Being Practical

I find it slightly amusing that quite often when I talk to other martial artists, some of them get so worked up about what's practical and what isn't. In one discussion, we were talking about martial arts weaponry including bo staffs and swords. This one fellow was commenting that swords are not practical since we don't usually carry around swords anymore but sticks can be found anywhere, which can substitute for staffs. This is the same type of fellow who would discredit the fancy moves in many bo staff forms, especially the open and extreme style of weapons forms since they are not practical for the streets. Although he has a point in all this, he is missing something that will be very relevant for many martial artists.Although many of the fancy moves in both weapons and non-weapons martial arts forms as well as unpractical weapons such as swords have very little use in real life combat or self defense situations, one should not forget that there are other purposes with these. Many martial arts techniqu...

Martial arts: keep your guard up

The martial arts are perhaps among the more dangerous sports one can get involved in but they are extremely rewarding and fun to do. They take many years to master but once you have become a master yourself you will never look back. There are many disciplines to choose from: Thai boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Karate, Kendo to name but a few. No matter which one you choose you can be sure that you are going to be in for a few knocks and bruises. This should most certainly not be a deterrent, however, as you can always give as good as you get! There are many different grades of martial artist from the rank amateur to the seasoned pro and everyone has their own level of commitment and proficiency. No matter how proficient you are, it is prudent to make sure you are protected from any unwanted medical costs as a result of any injury you might receive. If you are covered by a specialised sports insurance policy then you can be sure that you'll be fully looked after, when it comes to getting treatment for that broken ...
